City Series: From Planetary to Provincial Gentrification: Lessons for Leicester?

City Series is a new public lecture series in Leicester that delivers free events relating to a wide range of urban topics, such as architecture, history and geography. This is a collaboration between Leicester City Council, De Montfort University, University of Leicester, and Loughborough University, with speakers from those institutions and from the wider community. 

The latest lecture will be delivered by Loretta Lees and will focus on urban gentrification, a subject in which she is an international expertLoretta is a Professor in Human Geography, Director of Research in Geography and Co-director of the new Centre for Critical and Creative Geographies at the University of Leicester. The talk will draw on her recently published book ‘Planetary Gentrification’ (co-authored with Hyun Bang Shin in Geography at the London School of Economics and Ernesto Lopez-Morales in planning at the University of  Santiago, Chile), which was the launch text for a new series by Polity Press Cambridge on Urban Futures. She will outline the processes involved in C21st gentrification globally, before discussing the national and local context, including possible alternative forms of urban regeneration.
